Introduction

The doctor of naturopathic medicine (NMD) program at the University of Western States (UWS) prepares students to take a holistic and individualized approach to health and healing and integrates the principles of functional medicine throughout the naturopathic program. Graduates learn to consider the whole person including the patient’s diet, lifestyle, environment, genetics, physical, mental and emotional health, as well as other factors that influence health and well-being.

The inclusion of functional medicine principles in the UWS naturopathic program distinguishes it from other naturopathic programs. Naturopathic medicine and functional medicine are science-based, patient-centered approaches to achieving and maintaining health by addressing the root cause, not just suppressing symptoms.

This 14-quarter doctoral program can be completed in three-and-a-half years and is taught on our beautiful campus in Portland, Oregon as well as online. The program provides a community of learning through synchronous and asynchronous online delivery and in-person experiences, with knowledge, skills, and community reinforced through in-person labs.

Program Highlights

Functional Medicine Framework

Students in the doctor of a naturopathic degree program are prepared to serve as primary healthcare providers and use a functional medicine framework to optimize a patient’s health, function, and well-being.

Personalized, Whole-Health Approach

Students learn to evaluate and address a wide range of essential factors that influence a patient’s inherent healing capacity, like nutritional status, genetic profile, and mental and emotional health. Then create personalized care plans that meet a patient’s unique needs.

Opportunities for Dual Degrees

UWS offers multiple graduate-level programs that can be taken in conjunction with the NMD degree so that students can specialize in their practice. Areas of interest include nutrition, functional medicine, chiropractic, counseling, psychology, and sports medicine.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The naturopathic medicine program is housed on the UWS campus in Portland, Oregon – featuring modern technology, state-of-the-art classrooms, and learning spaces, and a world-class clinic facility. The clinic is centrally located in Portland, near public transit, making it easy to access for patients and the community.
