Introduction
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Universitas Syiah Kuala (FVM-USK), Banda Aceh. Indonesia is one of the oldest faculties within this university. FVM-USK was established on October 17, 1960, and already plays an important role in improving the competence of human resources who are professional and have strong analytical skills in the fields of animal health, zoonoses, and food safety of animal origin. The strategy to achieve these targets is outlined in the vision of FVM-USK: “become innovative, independent, and leading in implementing the three pillars of higher education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi) with reliable human resources in developing and application veterinary technology at the international level by 2030”.
FVM-USK is provided education for both Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine Study Program (BVM-SP) and Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine Study Program (PPVM-SP). The two study programs have been accredited with “Excellent” category by the National Accreditation Institution for Higher Education in Medical Sciences (LAMPTKes). In these two study programs, we have a number of 900 students coming from many parts of Indonesia, with different backgrounds and culture.
The courses conducted in BVM-SP follow the standard of education curriculum of the Association of Indonesian Veterinary Faculty, which was developed based on the standard of “the day one veterinarian competencies” from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH/ formerly known as Office International des Epizooties (OIE)). It describes the knowledge, skills, and attributes required of veterinary students upon graduation to ensure that they are prepared for their first role in the profession and safe to practice independently. By adopting this standard, we expect to enable graduates to achieve competency that matches international demands.
So far, our veterinary education program has been successful in providing the best hands-on experience to the students. The interactive teaching is delivered in representative facilities, to maximize student experience through small group teaching and early clinical exposure. FVM-USK conducts education and research supported by 12 integrated laboratories and veterinary teaching hospitals, which enable the students to build up their medical skills throughout their education programs. In addition, to support the spirit of global socio-technopreuneurship from USK, then FVM-USK just established a student entrepreneurship development facility. The academic staff are very supportive to encourage students to be creative and become independent learners. They encourage interaction with students to face any challenges during their campus life with the spirit of “We Are Problem Solvers”.
FVM-USK is one of the best in Indonesia conducting the learning process by exploring animal health and treatment across species such as farm animals, companion animals, and exotic animals, as well as wildlife species. The location of our faculty in Sumatera Island, Indonesia allows the students to learn directly from the field where most of wildlife species still coexist in nature. The faculty has also collaborated with a number of national and international institutions leading to breakthroughs in knowledge, improvement of human resource professionals, and better access to international relations. FVM-USK is also a member of the Asian Association of Veterinary Schools (AAVS). In any academic activities, the students can learn from both national and global experts. The aim is to prepare the graduates to become competent veterinarians globally.
In 2022, FVM-USK established the International Class of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (ICBVM). This English-taught class aims to accommodate the expected overseas students who want to study at FVM-USK. The ICBVM quota is around 25 prospective students per year. The student’s learning process is conducted in a special-exclusive classroom with supported facilities and technology.
