Introduction
At the University of Skövde, you can study a one-year master’s programme in Infection Biology. The programme has been developed in close cooperation with businesses working within bioscience and the biotechnology sector.
Infection Biology is a growing field within biology that combines immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and cell biology. Research and education within this field are important to understand and control various types of infectious diseases in the future.
Opportunities for international studies
You will have the opportunity to carry out part of your degree project abroad.
Admissions
Curriculum
The study programme is provided by the University of Skövde and is named Infection Biology - Master's Programme (Infektionsbiologi - magisterprogram). It comprises 60 credits and is a second-cycle programme. The main field of study is Bioscience.
Constituent courses in the study programme
During the first semester, you will study bioinformatics, biostatistics and infection biology at second-cycle level. You will learn experimental methods, so extensive independent laboratory work will play a key role. You will use techniques such as PCR, cloning, cell cultivation and protein expression alongside computer-based molecular biology and bioinformatics tools to analyse DNA, RNA and proteins. You will study molecular mechanisms and processes involved in the pathogenesis of various microorganisms, as well as the molecular and cellular process of immune defence. You will also learn about the structure of genes and proteins, as well as our understanding of their function and regulation.
During the second semester, you will carry out a degree project (30 credits) at a business or an educational institution, either in Sweden or abroad. You will apply your new knowledge, working independently to solve topical, relevant research problems within infection biology.
All teaching is conducted in English.
The study programme comprises the following courses:
- Experimental Methods and Design in Bioscience A1N, 17.5 credits
- Molecular and Cellular Infection Biology A1N, 7.5 credits
- Data Analysis Life Science A1N, 5 credits
- Master's Degree Project in Bioscience A1E, 30 credits
Program Outcome
Objectives for Master's degree according to the Higher Education Ordinance
- Knowledge and understanding
- Proficiency and Ability
- Ability to Evaluate and Relate
- Local Objective for the Programme at The University of Skövde
Career Opportunities
You will be able to work within fields such as microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology and infection biology. There are many potential workplaces, both within Sweden and internationally. Examples include analytical and pharmaceutical companies, healthcare, and research laboratories within the public and private sectors.
Opportunities for further studies
After the programme, you can continue with a third-cycle education.
