Presentation and objectivesMan has taken care of the hand since ancient times. Thus, Anaxagoras thought that because of her he had become the most intelligent of living beings, unlike Aristotle, according to whom, because he was the most intelligent of living beings, for that reason he had his hands.
It is in turn an organ of expression and a special organ of the senses for stereognosia. The ideas are linked to the sensations and actions of the hands not only in the fundamental activities concerning protection, food, combat and perpetuation, but also in creation, such as building, drawing, modelling and even thinking.
Its complexity has always aroused a special attraction for surgeons. This has led to a better understanding of its anatomy, its biomechanics and the nosological processes that it underpins. The result of this interest is the experienced development of new imaging and surgical techniques, which allow better clinical results and offer a more individualized treatment to patients.
More than 7,000 articles are reviewed annually in Medline that deal in a general way about hand surgery, an unequivocal sign of the existing concern regarding the pathology of this anatomical region and its surgical treatment.
This excessive information easily leads to misinformation, either due to lack of time or lack of rigor. It is necessary to establish a selection of the most relevant contents and a contextualized analysis of them.
The Andalusian Society of Traumatology and Orthopedics (SATO) and its Hand Study Group (GAMA) made up of experts in hand surgery, sensitive to this interest and to the request for training in this area of knowledge by many physicians, conceive the Need to establish a national and international course from Andalusia to meet this demand.
The course is based on five basic elements:A postgraduate offer of interest. There is a segment of graduates who want to undertake postgraduate studies and increase their skills and knowledge in this "subspecialty" of surgery and achieve the status of expert, this will undoubtedly open the door to better jobs. The structure that best suits these expectations is that of a university master's degree. The importance of a master's degree in Spain has grown especially since the Bologna Plan came into operation, where master's degrees or specialization courses are a basic complement to the training acquired in the career, enhance and enrich the curriculum, provide specialization and knowledge that is not normally received during the career and that is essential in the daily practice of the job. This relevance is greater in the area of hand surgery as it is considered a subspecialty in many countries.
A consistent and well-defined program. Taking into account the objective of the master's degree to increase the knowledge acquired about the hand and wrist, its injuries, its diseases, their treatment and its functional recovery, a consistent, dense program has been established since the hand is one of the parts more complex from the functional point of view. The 6 modules into which the syllabus has been divided give an orderly satisfaction to these needs.
A course that encourages active learning with a very practical orientation. Participants will acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to address the main issues of differential diagnosis, decision-making and surgical skills. The classes will have a theoretical-practical approach, combining the teacher's explanation, with analysis of practical cases, study and discussion of real examples, etc. This teaching methodology, in addition to promoting active student learning, enables continuous evaluation of the knowledge acquired and dynamic participation during classes, as a fundamental element of integration and teamwork. The practical workshops with human specimens and phantoms will allow training in the surgical techniques learned in the theoretical classes. The multidisciplinary nature of the course, with students from different areas of knowledge, will allow participants to acquire a broad and varied cross-cutting training. The interrelation of physicians in training with professionals with years of experience and contact with the real problems of daily practice, provides the student with a very important benefit, both with regard to making the most correct decisions, as well as in the experience of their future .
A group of solvent professors with quality training and proven teaching and research experience in the field that is the subject of the course. All teachers have sufficient knowledge in the subject they are going to teach, as well as extensive professional experience in their professional field. They come both from the university sphere, as well as from private and public healthcare. A very important aspect is that they have held or occupy positions of responsibility and, therefore, have a global vision of the issues to be discussed. It is a group of teachers who are very cohesive and motivated with the course. In each of the class sessions, in addition to explaining the subject, they will explain how the results of the subject analyzed should be presented, they will provide the necessary reference material and they will guide the students in the practices that they must carry out. During the course and once it is finished, and at the request of the students, they will attend and advise the participants in those technical aspects related to the research they develop.
A course that facilitates professional projection and job opportunities. As long as specialized training has been done in the national health system in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology or other surgical specialties, for Spanish doctors, or a surgical specialty is accredited in another country, the student will be able to obtain theoretical knowledge with this master's degree and sufficient practical skills that will enable you to develop the subspecialty in hand and wrist surgery. This master's degree will allow them to obtain sufficient theoretical knowledge to apply for the European diploma in hand surgery from the European Federation of Hand Surgery Societies (European board of Hand Surgery Diploma examination-FESSH).ProgrammeModule 1.
