Overview

The program is designed to meet the development needs of professionals working in the field of public health or related fields such as occupational health, environmental health, primary care or health promotion. It is appropriate for those working in health and social care organizations, including health authorities, government departments and health service providers such as hospitals and clinics. The course will also be appropriate for those who wish to pursue a career in academic public health or to learn more about epidemiology and statistics for research or health service evaluation. The program is part-time. The program is modular with teaching taking place during intensive courses 0830-1700 Wednesday-Saturday.

Programme Objectives

  • History and philosophy of public health as well as its core values, concepts, functions, and leadership roles.
  • Population health concepts, and the processes, approaches, and interventions that identify and address the major health-related needs and concerns of populations.
  • Concepts, methods, and tools of public health data collection, analysis and interpretation, and the evidence-based reasoning and informatics approaches that are essential to public health practice.
  • Biological, environmental, socio-economic, behavioral, cultural, and other factors that impact human health, influence the global and societal burden of disease and contribute to health disparities.
  • Identification and pursuit of opportunities for promoting health and preventing disease across the lifespan and for enhancing public health preparedness.
  • Characteristics and organizational structures of selected health care systems.
  • Legal, ethical, economic, and regulatory dimensions of health care and public health policy.
  • Public health-specific communication and social marketing, including technical and professional writing.
  • The cultural context of public health issues.
  • Globalization and sustainable development and their relationship to population health.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Use advanced concepts, methods, and tools of public health data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Identify and address the major health-related needs and concerns of populations using population health concepts and methods
  • Analyze the biological, environmental, socio-economic, behavioral, cultural, and other factors that impact human health.
  • Use effective communication and strategies for promoting health and preventing disease across the lifespan.
  • Compare the characteristics and organizational structures of health care systems in selected countries.
  • Explain the legal, ethical, economic, and regulatory dimensions of health care and public health policy.

Admission Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree or it is equivalent from an accredited university recognized by the UAE Ministry of higher education and scientific research;
  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in all undergraduate work.
  • A score of at least 6.0 on the IELTS Academic exam or equivalent.
  • This test score must be less than two years old at the time of application, with the following exceptions:

Conditional Acceptance

An applicant with a Bachelor degree recognized by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research may be granted conditional admission into the Master’s program in one and only one of the following cases:

  • An applicant with an IELTS score of 5.5, or its equivalent. Such a Student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to a dismissal:
  1. Must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or its equivalent, by the end of the student’s first semester of study;
  2. May take a maximum of six (6) credits hours in the first semester, not including intensive English courses;
  3. Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.

An applicant with an undergraduate cumulative GPA less than 3.0 but equal or higher than 2.5, or its equivalent. Such a student must meet the following requirements during the period of conditional admission or be subject to a dismissal:

  1. May take a maximum of nine (9) credits hours in the first semester of study;
  2. Must achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the first 9 credit hours of credit-bearing courses studied in the Master’s program.

Merit Fellowship Award

To receive the Merit Award, students are expected to have high academic credentials and maintain their academic success at the UAEU. The Merit Fellowship Award offers a financial assistance in form of partial tuition waiver to qualified students. Students in STEM and strategic areas of the country (renewable energy, transportation, health, water resources, technology, space) will have priority.

Student Eligibility:

  • Have Excellent Academic Standing (GPA ≥ 3.6/4.0).
  • Maintain a GPA ≥3.6/4.0 during study at UAEU.
  • Have no other financial sponsorship or award.

Benefits:

  • 50% discount on tuition fees.

Duration:

  • Valid until graduation as long as the student is abiding with the Student Eligibility conditions.
