Introduction
Master in Pharmaceutical Analysis
A pharmaceutical analysis is the study of composition, property, quality control, quality assurance and biomedical characteristics of natural, chemical and bioengineering drugs (pharmaceuticals) in simple or complex matrices with emphasis on separation sciences. The contributions made by pharmaceutical analysis have played critical roles in the whole pharmaceutical sciences ranging from the development of concepts, theories and analytical techniques to a variety of practical applications, such as drug design and development applications, quality control and assurance of industrial manufacturing, clinical investigation and application.
China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), the first college with an emphasis on pharmacy in China, was founded in 1936. The department of pharmaceutical analysis was established in 1960 to serve the needs of research and development of drug industry in the nation.
During the past 50 years, the faculty members of pharmaceutical analysis worked hard together, focusing on researching of drug quality control and assurance, compiling of textbooks, developing of teaching skills and reforming of teaching methods. Significant achievements have been made and several famous masters of pharmaceutical analysis were honored nationwide, such as AN Deng-kui, ZHANG Zheng-xing and LIU Wen-ying. The department is awarded the highest place for education, research, and service on pharmaceutical analysis of all the universities in China.
The science of pharmaceutical analysis was authorized to offer graduate programs, leading to the Master's degree, by the State Council of Higher Education in 1981. The doctor of pharmaceutical analysis degree was approved in 1986. It is also the first education base to offer Master's and doctor's degrees for international students. The science of pharmaceutical analysis is playing an increasing role in pharmacy education at CPU, offering pre-eminent health sciences professional education and research opportunities and is ranked among the top research-intensive universities in the nation.
Mission
As part of a research-intensive university, the goals of the science of pharmaceutical analysis are to:
Prepare students to be leaders in the profession of pharmacy and to provide them with the tools to effectively practice in a wide variety of currently existing and potential future roles in hospitals and medical centers, community pharmacy settings, academia, government and the pharmaceutical industry.
Develop and maintain research initiatives in the basic, clinical and practical sciences to discover new knowledge and new approaches to enhance health care.
Foster collaboration with other Schools or Institutions of Medicine and drug industries to enhance and expand education and research opportunities.
Curricula and Textbooks
A broad-based curricular system has been constructed with strong basic science, a diversity of clinical experiences and the opportunity for independent study in a variety of research and clinical settings. The curricula consist of four major components around the pharmaceutical analysis courses: Pharmaceutical Analysis; Chromatographic Analysis of Medicine; Spectroscopic Analysis of Medicine; Analysis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Among them, the pharmaceutical analysis course has been honored the National Level Model Course in 2008 by Ministry of Education.
The department of pharmaceutical analysis has a long history of compiling of textbooks. The first textbook of pharmaceutical analysis was born here in 1980 with professor AN Dengkui as the chief editor. Currently, a series of textbooks (including bilingual materials) have been compiled. Some of the textbooks have been honored as the National Level Model Textbook. These materials are aimed to provide readers with a large quantity of information on all kinds of analytical techniques.

Research Activities
A wide range of research activities is going on here. Apart from daily teaching responsibilities, about 10 research programs that are financed by the State Key Programs Fund, State New Drug Research Funds and provincial departments are being undertaken. Many projects have matched the international level and some have even filled the blanks in the country's pharmaceutical field. These research activities enrich the teaching contents and provide a lot, not only some cutting-edge knowledge but also practical research methods.
Faculty members
The pharmaceutical analysis team boasts more than 12 faculty members of professors and pharmaceutical experts, among them. They are ZHNG zun-jian, FENG Fang, HANG Tai-jun, DING Li, LIU Wen-yuan, DI Bin, SONG Min, SONG Qin-xing, DING Ya, XIANG Bin-ren, ZHANG Zheng-xing and LIU Wen-ying.
Everyone in the team collaborates with each other to promote the CPU's mission of excellence in the areas of education, research, and public service.
The group of pharmaceutical analysis is also active in international academic exchanges. Four of them have the experiences of academic exchange overseas, including Japan, the United States, and the UK. In addition, it maintains academic relationships with many research institutions and colleges in many countries and regions.
