Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences is the first Austrian university to offer a comprehensive medical education which satisfies the objectives of the Bologna process. It consists of two components:

  • The Health Sciences bachelor programme is a foundation for careers in new and emerging areas of the health sciences and a requirement for further study on our Human Medicine master program.
  • The Human Medicine master programme offers the scientific training required to enter the medical profession and provides the skills needed by independent practitioners.

Health Sciences bachelor programme

Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences is the first Austrian higher education institute to offer interdisciplinary medical degree programms in line with the requirements of the Bologna model. The Health Sciences bachelor programm gives students the skills they need to enter new, cutting-edge health professions, and lays the foundations for developing medical expertise. The combination of courses in human medicine, biomedical engineering, and health economics is designed to produce medical experts with state-of-the-art skills profiles. Thanks to a clearly structured curriculum aimed at nurturing professional qualities, program graduates will have developed interdisciplinary communication and problem-solving skills, and are also in a position to identify and respond to health-related problems. They are able to work effectively in the highly complex public health sector, skilfully discuss problems and take appropriate responsive action. A fully integrated curriculum geared towards enhancing expertise in a diverse range of subjects gives students the interdisciplinary communication, professional and problem-solving skills they require to address medical, biomedical engineering and health economics issues. The Health Sciences bachelor programme is a prerequisite for entry to, but not a replacement for the Human Medicine master program, which is designed to build on the knowledge acquired by Health Sciences programme graduates.


At the end of the degree programme, students sit a final examination and are required to write a bachelor thesis which may be used as the basis for their subsequent master thesis and the related synopsis. The bachelor thesis enables students to enhance and demonstrate their theoretical and methods-based skills in relation to medical practice. Students are also expected to show that they can employ appropriate, systematic approaches to produce an academic paper and present their findings – both orally and in writing – in accordance with academic practice. In addition, the structure of the paper should meet academic standards.

Human Medicine master programme

The Human Medicine master programme builds on the Health Sciences bachelor degree. Besides offering the scientific training required to enter the medical profession, the program is geared towards providing the skills needed by independent practitioners. The curriculum also supports the development of the core competencies of medical experts – professional conduct, interdisciplinary collaboration and communicative abilities – and other key qualities required for a medical career. On completing their degree, graduates receive the academic title of doctor of medicine (Dr.med.univ.). This wide-ranging programme provides students with comprehensive expertise. Courses include a strong practical element and students get to grips with concrete medical issues at an early stage. The emphasis is on health science topics in a range of disciplines. An additional focus on technology and economics means that graduates will have developed strong interdisciplinary communication and problem-solving skills, and excellent clinical abilities. As a result, they are ideally placed to assume the responsibilities of decision-makers in an advanced health care system. The program’s distinctive practical element comes courtesy of our close relations with a network of university hospitals comprising facilities in St Pölten, Krems, and Tulln. The Biomedical Engineering, Health Economics/Health Care Management, and Applied Clinical Science electives give prospective physicians the opportunity to carry out specialist research into these topics during their degree.


At the end of the programme, students are required to write a master thesis. They begin working towards the thesis in the first semester when they present a synopsis of a study project. Students obtain specific methodological expertise during elective courses and use this know-how to draft a study protocol which serves as the basis for their master thesis. The electives, which students select from a range of modules, lay the groundwork for the master thesis.

- Health Economics

- Health Care Management

Applied Clinical Science Master thesis supervisors, in consultation with the degree program director, may require students to attend a voluntary elective with a workload of 10 ECTS credits, if this is essential for meeting the methods-based and content-related requirements of the master thesis project. Students may also choose to take voluntary electives (especially in the Biomedical Technology elective) subject to the approval of their thesis supervisor and the degree programme director.
