Our faculty and staff train clinicians who are dedicated to patient care in all settings and possess the skill and knowledge to practice pharmacy at the highest level possible. HPU SOP will utilize a closely integrated basic and clinical science curriculum to promote student application of the full range of skills necessary to provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care. Our teaching methods will utilize evidence-based techniques that promote long-term learning and expand the ability to synthesize the rapidly changing knowledge in healthcare.
Standardized Client Programme in the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy at High Point University
Standardized Clients (SC) are an important part of the HPU Pharmacy Programme and give our students first-hand experiences in an environment where they will apply newly learned skills in a real-world format.
Students are given a patient scenario where case specifics are defined, as to what condition, medications, and problems the patient may have, so they can apply critical thinking skills in performing a medication history, assessing the problem, identifying what needs to be done, and counseling the patient, parent, or healthcare provider. By practicing independently, without instructors or peers, to solve the patient’s problem, the student quickly realizes what is needed to help a patient. This is the ‘real test of what is needed to know’ to be an extraordinary pharmacist in today’s world!
Standardized Clients are recruited and trained to portray live patients. SCs learn and act out the defined script consistently so that each student gets the ‘same’ experience. The faculty trains each SC to perform the role.
Feedback from the standardized client, the faculty, and the video recording gives our students an ‘edge’ in acquiring patient-centered skills.
- The SC provides feedback to the student on communication skills and how the overall experience was.
- The faculty scrutinizes the encounter to provide professional knowledge to the student.
- The student self-assesses their performance to identify improvements.
Inter-professional education (IPE) is a collaborative learning experience including students and educators from multiple health professions. Through IPE, students develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to become effective members of the healthcare team. Here at High Point University’s Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy, we are dedicated to incorporating IPE throughout our curriculum to ensure that our students are prepared to deliver excellent patient care in today’s multidisciplinary healthcare settings.
Our IPE plan incorporates four basic steps: exposure, immersion, experience, and competence.
From the very beginning of our curriculum, students are exposed to a variety of healthcare fields through guest lectures and interactive laboratory exercises. They learn from other health care providers about their respective fields and how these disciplines relate to pharmacy practice.
As students advance through the program, they are immersed in collaborative healthcare environments, both live and simulated, where they develop key inter-professional skills. Simulations include standardized client cases and laboratory courses that involve multiple health care providers. During their introductory community and hospital pharmacy rotations, students practice their inter-professional sills in real-world healthcare settings.
By the third year of our program, students are well prepared to participate in and contribute to inter-professional workshops hosted by Triad IHEC (Inter-professional Health Education Center). Triad IHEC is a collaborative effort involving multiple professional schools from different institutions in the area, including High Point University, NC A&T, and UNC Greensboro. Here our students work and learn alongside students from various health care programs.
Students spend their final year of the program learning, practicing, and exhibiting their inter-professional competencies during the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE). These practical experiences allow students to utilize and polish their inter-professional knowledge, skills, and behaviors before graduation.
Triad Inter-professional Health Education Center (Triad IHEC)
At the inception of the Health Sciences program at High Point University in 2015, the Triad IHEC was formed between the UNCG Schools of Nursing and Social Work, NC A & T Schools of Nursing and Social Work, and HPU Schools of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The Triad IHEC brings together students from multiple health professions and universities across the Triad for a series of 4-hour inter-professional workshops where students work in inter-professional teams to complete assignments, including patient cases.
