Programme Description

The podiatrist is a health professional who intervenes on the cutaneous and nail problems as well as all the affections related to the structure of the foot and the walk (or the race). The care of this paramedical specialist can be educational, preventive and curative.

On or without a medical prescription, he carries out after a complete clinical examination, care, advises on footwear, designs and manufactures protective or correction devices as well as soles.

The chiropodist aims to prevent, restore and compensate for pathologies and / or local and non-systemic events related to the foot of his patients (children, adults, athletes and the elderly).

Recognized by the INAMI, He is also brought to take care of diabetic patients.

He can practice, alone or in a multidisciplinary team, in a private practice, in a hospital environment, in rest homes and care homes, in medical centers, sports clubs, etc.

Professional training

Three-year full-year, in-the-day training consists of:

• 1/3 of basic sciences,

• 1/3 podiatry art (including laboratories)

• 1/3 clinical placements and seminars

Local, scientific and human education

The teaching team is made up of field professionals and teachers specialized in the field of podiatry.

While guiding and accompanying, the training promotes autonomy, responsibility and participation of the student. The team favors active teaching methods that promote reflexivity, interdisciplinarity, research and innovation.

Training aims :

Podiatrist training has two main objectives:

• learning methods for podological investigations and treatment of structural and functional disorders resulting from static, dynamic biometric anomalies as well as disturbances related to neurological and vascular diseases,

• On the other hand, the student must acquire skills in the preventive and therapeutic care of epidermal and nail infections of the foot.

As a paramedic, one of the podiatrist's priorities is to look for the cause (s) of any disease. This competent professional approach allows him to anchor his podiatrist intervention in a global approach to the person.

What are the opportunities ?

The chiropodist works in a private practice or at the patient's home, in a hospital, nursing home, geriatric institutions, diabetology services, orthopedic services, sports centers ... His role is to prevent foot pathologies, to treat with technologies advanced, to participate in the research on the statics and dynamics of walking.

The podiatrist works in various fields of preventive and curative health care in a care institution such as general and specialized hospitals.

He is sought after by specialized services in the management of the diabetic foot for his particular expertise in care and soles.
